Women in Black Vigil and Ash Wednesday Prayer

CNWE members today stand in solidarity with “Women in Black” throughout the world.

The Women in Black stand in silent vigil to protest all forms of injustice in the world and in the churches.

We protest war, rape as a tool of war, ethnic cleansing and human rights abuses.
We protest all relationships of domination and subordination.

We are silent because mere words cannot express the tragedy that wars, hatred and injustice bring.

We refuse to add to the cacophony of empty statements that are spoken with the best intentions yet may be erased or go unheard under a passing ambulance, shots fired or the sound of a bomb exploding nearby.

Our silence is visible.

We invite women to stand with us, reflect about themselves and women who have been raped, tortured or killed in concentration camps, women who have disappeared, whose loved ones have disappeared or have been killed, whose homes have been demolished, whose churches and governments have been silent.

We wear black as a symbol to mourn for all victims of war, to mourn the destruction of people, nature, religion and the fabric of life.

Mission: to enable women to name their giftedness and from that awareness to effect structural change in the Church that reflects the mutuality and coresponsibility of women and men within that church.
